My own memory of World War two is as clear today to myself as it was over 60 years ago. As I am still today proud to say that I served for my king and country as the expression goes. I served in the WRAF, the Woman’s Royal Air Force. The Rank/Title was known as L.A.W (Leading Air force Women) I was billeted mainly from Loncoln/Cambridge at Camps.
My position held mainly led me to be working from the officers mess, where I still have some sad memories of lots of those young pilots that went out on operations and never ever came back.
But also I will express my most cherished memory from that war, was that I actually married one of those young pilots. He was flight Sergeant Mr William (Bill) Thomas Tozer. He was from the 101 Squadron (Fido) in bomber command. Believe me, he actually saw some action being there on the front line. His plane named ‘Nan’, actually went on the run to bomb the ‘Berchtes Garden’. I really do believe that this left my late husband in a very nervous disposition in much later years. I also did the fire watch often with the thought in my head ‘Would Bill return home after each trip?’ I remember staring up at the sky which was all lit up.
Now I look back over the years I believe that the war made England become a much better place to live in. I still maintain today that it is still the best country in the world to be in.
