My Uncle John was a telegram message-boy during the first few years of the war, and had the task of delivering call-up papers and, later, those awful telegrams from the War Office.
He and his colleague were most put out when, on declaration of war, their expected delivery of motor cycles was cancelled and they were stuck with ordinary bicycles for the duration. They compensated by going 鈥渧room-vroom鈥 as they zig-zagged their way along the bomb-cratered roads!
Later in the war, when he was old enough, he joined the merchant navy, visiting most of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Ceylon and South Africa 鈥 and I have a treasured photograph of him in uniform holding that most coveted of wartime food 鈥 bananas!
