It was strange how we got used to things. At first when the sirens sounded you jumped out of bed and dashed down to our raid shelter which were built for the individual houses and were like a bare brick box. Any kind of comfort you had to promote for yourself. As time went on we installed bunks.

My mother, father and me were there as a rule. After a while you got used to the raids. I was ten years old. Terrifying for the adults but for us kids it was almost like an enormous game of football. Above all, there was a feeling of absolute confidence.

We were British. The Britons always won the war and that was it.
