I was 5 years old when war broke out. I remember when I was 7 we were in the air raid shelter one night. We were woken up by lots of airplaines going over and bombs being dropped. The searchlights were all over the sky and it was really noisy. I poked my head out of the shelter and it looked to me as though Germans were running across the rooftops. It was very frightening and then my Mum dragged me back in again. It was all in my imagination but I've never forgotten it.
My Dad worked all day at GKN making screws and bolts and then at night he was firefighting. We didn't see much of him as Mum and my two sisters and me were left at home.
