I was a young child,I remember the bombing was getting really bad in the area aroung my home. The Germans were trying to destroy the gas works which were near to my home.
This particular day,the sirens went off and we took shelter in our understairs cupboard. My mother and I always went there if there was an air raid.
The German bombers were flying overhead, the noise was dreadful and we were absolutely terrified.
My mum said,"They have got us bad this time".
Eventually when the all clear siren sounded we cautiously left our hideaway under the stairs. We were holding our breath as we came out,not knowing what we would see as we emerged.
To our horror, all our windows had come out,the ceilings had come down too, what a mess.Poor mum.
We looked over the road, only to see that opposite the houses had, had a direct hit and the people who once lived there had been sadly killed.
We walked down our front path, white and shaking the pair of us.
There were two factory girls walking past with their turbans on.They saw the shocked faces of me and mum,and said to mum,"Have a fag love".Now mum had never smoked before, infact I dont think she quite knew what to do with it,but she took one, puffed on it,and nearly coughed her heart up, bless her.She unfortunately got the hang of it quite quickly. For years after that she smoked, always blaming the war for making her start!
