Derek was eight when the war started in 1939. Derek is now 73. During the air raids in Barrow in 1941 none of his loved ones died but ninety-six people were killed and hundreds hurt.
Thousands of houses were damaged and people had to live in reception centres until their houses were repaired. Derek was bombed out and his Mum and Dad went to live in Marton.
Derek went to Marton to sleep but went back to Barrow every day to get clean clothes and to go to school and help his Dad look after the rest of the family.
Derek like everyone else was frightened when the bombs were falling on Barrow.
Derek did not get evacuated but many of his friends did. They had to take spare clothes and a favourite toy if they had one.
Derek was afraid of the Germans in case they invaded this country and won, but after 1943 he was certain that we were going to win.
There were air raid shelters in every back street and at every school.
When Derek got back to Barrow everyone had a street party.
