As the war dragged on and materials became short, iron railings and posts were removed from fences in the parks and gardens. Then of course there was rationing of food and coupons for clothes. Dried egg came in packets which I quite enjoyed scrambled. Most people were not well off in those days so I didn鈥檛 think rationing affected them too much.
I remember evacuees came from London, but many didn鈥檛 like leaving their families and after a while went back. One girl that came to our road stayed with the family until they died too. Being so near London we were very lucky that apart from hearing the boom of the bombs and seeing the reflections of the fires in the night sky, we escaped most of the devastation.
