I remember when I was about 10 years old and my father was an air-raid warden. He had to go out every night wearing his tin hat and carrying his gas mask to make sure that people were safe and all the houses were blacked out and no lights were showing. Out town suffered two air-raids every night which meant that we had to stay in the shelters until the all-clear was sounded. The bomber planes used to come over quite low so that they could follow the railway lines to guide them towards the other cities in the North. I can't remember where the planes were going - maybe towards Glasgow, i don't know but it was very scary and I wasn't very old at the time.
