I was out for a walk with my mother and small daughter when we heard a doodlebug almost overhead. So when we heard the engine cut out we knew that it would soon come down. The only thing to do was to jump into a ditch and hope for the best. We eventually heard it crash not far away.
When I took my new baby home from hospital from Edmonton to Potters Bar, we had to take a very long way round because the main road had a huge crater where a land mine had been dropped.
On a very hot day, I queued up for quite a long time hoping to get some bananas from the local greengrocers. It was so hot, I nearly fainted but I would not give up my place in the queue.
