It was the 2nd night of the Clydebank blitz, my memory fails as to the excact date. We were in an Anderson shelter listening to the hell out side when an exposion lifted the shelter up and out of the ground , placing us back at a 45 degree angle from the original. The door was completely destroyed, we were covered with mud. blood and everything movable. My Dad crawled out of the shelter to check on the state of the house, which was almost none exixtant . but to his amazement he found a 10 foot metal cylinder lying about 20 feet from the shelter. He assumed it to be an unexploded bomb of sorts, that may explode at any moment! tying a washing line around the bomb" he attempted to drag it away from the garden, in spite of the fact that all hell was about him he dragged the supposed bomb into the golf course that was ajacent to the garden. after 15 minutes or so he returned to repair the door to the shelter . We spent the remainder of the night awaiting the exposion of the bomb dad had moved. The next morning the "bomb" turned out to be the remains of another Anderson shelter that had received a direct hit and was hurlred into our garden. We all laughed at Dads unexploded bomb.It was years after that I realised how brave that man was! He did not know what he was dragging away and he could have been blown to bits if it really was a bomb. Many a soul was not so lucky that night ! but my Dad has always been a hero to me .
