My Grandad, Joseph Pannett, who died in December 2002, was a Dunkirk veteran. He rarely spoke about it and was always dismissive of the 'small ships' celebrations in peacetime. I always assumed that this was because of the trauma of remembering what he'd seen. He did once tell me about his night at Dunkirk, about the terrible bombing and strafing and about waking up in the morning in a pit he'd dug in the sand, covered in frogs!
It's a long shot, but if anyone out there knew him, or knew of him, I'd love to hear from you. I'm sorry to say I don't even know which regiment he was in, but he fought in France at Ypres and Lilles and in Iceland.
