After the forces I was based in Eglinton for six weeks at camp defence and there was a red alert one evening. I had to rush down to where there were twin Browning鈥檚 at the dispersery I was on. There was supposed to be another man there but he didn鈥檛 turn up. I pulled the covers off and there were no guns there either! They鈥檇 been taken away to be serviced and they were supposed to put two machine guns on instead.

While I was there, at one point there was a German plane, and it was pitch black, because of the blackout, and I saw this shadow come right out over me at no height, and I鈥檇 no guns to shoot with! She didn鈥檛 bomb anything that night, maybe it was better that we couldn鈥檛 shoot her! I had a shock.
