I was 11 when the War started. As an only child I was not evacuated. I can remember, however, all the other children from the school being sent away. They went on a train from Rock Ferry Station to Newtown, near Welshpool. I can still remember their mums’ being very upset as they saw their children off. Mothers were calling to the children to ‘Stay Together’ where there was more than one child in the family going on the train. Mothers with babies were also evacuated.
I went to Alpha Drive school for a couple of hours a day, morning or afternoon. A lot of the teachers had joined up, so there was a staff shortage.
It did not seem long before my friends started to come back again.
