My story is about my late parents. They were married in 1941. During war time things were on ration at the time and friends contributed their coupons etc to help with the cost of the wedding. Before and after the wedding my father was serving in the Army. He was on the Anti Aircraft on the heavy artillery. my mother worked locally in the offices of a wholesale manufacturing chemist. One of her duties was to take telephone orders from doctors, vets and pharmacists who were situated all over the U.K.. The items required at that time were mostly reffered to in medical latin. My mother was one of the First-Aid officers for the company. She also undertook fire-watching duties in the evenings. This continued during her pregnancy towards the end of WW2. At an earlier stage in the war an air raid shelter was built in our small garden. One night when the enemy air craft were overhead, my family including my mother, were assembled in the shelter. My mother desperately needed to go to the outside toilet a few feet away from the shelter. She had just returned to the shelter when an oil-bomb was dropped and hit the house. An air-raid warden managed to come to their rescue and helped them to climb over the neighbour's wall to safety. For seven months they stayed with family friends, as they were unable to return to the house until the damage had been repaired.

A few years later having been invalidated out of the army, my father returned home and my mother finished work. I was born towards the end of the war, following the pregnancy mentioned earlier.
