On thing I recall, is hearing about the Bootle Scout troop that received a bravery award for their work during the Blitz. As the bombs fell, they were delivering messages to the civil defence post etc. And the other was Sand bag Charlie. Now I don't think Charlie was his name but this is the story. Undertakers were paid by the council to bury the war dead. At the end of each week, the undertaker would go to the council office, and say that he had buried X bodies this week, and receive payement. It was not until much later when a check was done, It was worked out that this man had buried on his own, twice as many people than had died.
