My uncle by marriage,Jim Coffey, was in The
Royal Airforce in India and did not get back to England until,I think,1946.He said that he was so excited going up his street ,thinking his family (mother and sisters etc)would be overjoyed to see him.Anyway ,there was no answer when he knocked on the door.a window opened down the street and a neighbour said hello to my uncle(remember that he had been away for approx six years)said the his family were out getting in the victory harvest and shut the window. He had to sit on the step until they got back.
He worked for many years for the Stag Furniture Company(before the war and after) so his job was held for him.Anyway ,going back to work ,he was given a sheet of halfpenny stamps(apparently his due ) and picked up his work where he left off.So much for "hail the conquering hero....
