My parents lived in Southampton where Dad, who was in the Merchant Navy with P & O, was based. They suffered a lot of bombing there and returned to Belfast, just in time for the Easter raids here.
My Dad was on one of the last ships to leave the Channel Islands before the German occupation. He told us of how the Germans took reconnaissance photographs of shipping in the harbours of the islands, but when the Luftwaffe returned to bomb them, they missed because the boats had moved with the tides!
Dad was so modest about his war service that it was only this year (2003) that I discovered that he had crewed one of the "little ships" which rescued the BEF from the beaches of Dunkirk. He had never discussed it with me, but mentioned it to my husband who was interested in seafaring matters.
