Mrs Stephens, 85 year old that was 19 when war started, had just completed 1st year of teaching training, lived in Beterton had 1 sister and their cousin came to join her in the family in the war she got married in 1944 to a man in the navy called Eddie, later in the war Eddie flew planes in the army and was sent down to west Africa, all the cloths were rational whereas hats weren鈥檛 so when people where buying the hats they went mad, rationaling started in 1940 with bacon butter and sugar then latter on tea, and margarine and tinned fruit but people were short on fruit like apples and bananas, to get meat you have to be friendly with your butcher and everybody owned masses of vegetables in the war, nobody in England went hungry, the children that were evacuated were lower class and wet the bed, her husband was her first and only boyfriend.
