During the war there were a lot of Irish labourers in Yate, and they lived up in what is now called Kennedy Way - and could they drink! They were here for a very long time, and the brewers had permission to import barrels of Guinness for them.
They lived in Nissen huts; they were doing building and working in factories, and they came over because the money was good.
There were a lot of Belgians here, as refugees. They all worked as craftsmen at Newmans, and I'm pretty sure they all lived together in a couple of big houses. Some of them stayed on after the war.
