Wednesday,2nd.May 1945.
Rose at 0645 hours. Called at farmhouse
and greeted Soviet comrades. Received hot
water from girl for washing and shaving.
Has the influence of women affected me already? Took much more care to smarten
myself to-day. There were further signs of
Allied aircraft actvity in the neighborhood.
Heard as news from the German guards
that Adolf Hitler died a hero's death, leading his troops in action in Berlin.
Spoke again to Ukranian girls on the
farm. Bought two and one half loaves of bread for Thirteen cicarettes. I was still
comparatively "wealthy" .These purchases
were made from German soldiers, who had pulled out of Denmark. What a state they were in - even worse than us! How near are our troops now?
After a tea meal,I heard shouts of
"The Boy's Are Coming";"The Boy's Are Coming".There was great excitement ,as we all rushed on to the road, and were informed
that a British mobile column had been sighted near the village of Salem around five o'clock.
Whilst speaking to some civilians
about 1730 hours,I saw British armoured cars approaching - Royal Dragoons,I believe
What a sight! We gavw them a great welcome-
clambering on to the turrets of each vehicle, and shaking hands with the crews.
"This Is It"! Allied mobile columns
have reached us at last,at last. "We Are Free"!
Without any qualms.and a great deal of relief, our German guards surrendered their weapons and became our prisoners.
Douglas and I walked around the village, and had a liberation "brew" at the
home of an Ukranian family ,with whom we shared a good deal of our Red Cross food
parcels, and in all,we had a pleasant evening. To-night,we leftt our shed and slept in the farm loft.
