My Grandpa was a member of the Royal Air Force. He was flying over Hamberg and he was shot down. His plane was spiralling down and it as on fire, so he jumped out the plane and opened his parachute. As he opened his parachute, the upward force caused his shoes to fall off, so when he landed, the Germans thought that the English were so poor that they couuldnt even afford to give shoes to their pilots.
He was taken to Stalag Luft 4 for two years. He hardly got anything to eat, just weak watered down soup and black bread. When he left he weighed only seven stone.
The prisoners of war dug under the huts to try and escape, the Germans knew, but didnt say anything. When the prisoners were just about to finally get out, the Germans filled the hole with a truck full of human waste.
