Our air raid Shelter was a surface built one at the end of the garden. I went to bed in the house until the siren sounded at about 9.30, the Germans were very prompt, then in my wellies and coat carrying my pillow, teddy bear and panda an d a hot water bottle I would go out into the garden with my parents. AS we walked down to the shelter the searchlights were moving in the sky and the big guns sited on the golf course at the end of the road would already be firing, shaking the ground, and their flashes lighting up the night. It felt very safe in our little shelter and I slept in spite of the noise .
