Elaine Shuttleworth

When the war started in 1939, Elaine was four years old. Elaine lived in Leeds, and moved to another part of Leeds. The first thing they did was to buy an air raid shelter.
At school there was only women teachers, and everyone had to take gas masks to school. There was also a shelter made of bricks which was built into a cloakroom.
She would go to the cinema once a week, mainly with her parents. The films in those days were: Tarzan, Cowboy films and one was called when the rain came, which she could remember watching twice.
Elaine commented no the Blackout that was annoying because you could couldn鈥檛 see any thing. She said that she longed for chocolate and didn鈥檛 like rationing, probably because she liked a variety of food.
