I was in the A.R.P. using a stirrup pump. There was a lot of Airmen who used to go down to Rolls-Royce to learn about the engines.

I worked at the Ordnance depot. We used to send out army parts for trucks and tanks. I worked there from 1940 onwards, until 1945 when I got pregnant whilst my husband was on leave.

There used to be big cans of oil at the top of our street. They were used to create the smoke screens. We used to walk down the street and lose our way!

One morning my mum, a friend and I were walking to work when a plane began machine gunning. I tried to get my mum to get down into the nearest ditch when she exclaimed 'it's ok, I have my brolly up!'
I still laugh about that now!
