Joan Black

Saughall Massie, Wirral.

I was 4 years old when war broke out, but I have memories of the air raid sirens and being carried downstairs to the Shelter, where we would all sing songs to keep our spirits up!
Rationing, of course, meant no sweets, but I never remember being hungry. Our mothers coped admirably. I remember being sent to the Co-op with the ration Books to buy the weekly allowance.
The 鈥淧ig Bin鈥 was just across the road, and we children were sent to put scraps in it. My Dad grew vegetables to implement our diet and we walked everywhere, of course!
