The start of my time in the Land Army didn鈥檛 go too well, as on the way to my billet, a lady startled me with the words 鈥淵ou keep your hands off my Sam, I have heard what you lands army girls are like鈥
Arriving at the farm, where I was to work in the dairy, I found the cowman hadn鈥檛 wanted a girl. He wouldn鈥檛 speak to me that day and this went on for a whole month. I found this very difficult as I was expected to feed the calves not knowing how old they were, but with the help of Alf, the horseman, I survived. Eventually the cowman, Ernie came round, especially after the farmer said he would be the first one to go if he didn鈥檛.
After that things began to go well. We only had twenty (sic) cows to look after so were expected to help out wherever needed. Every farm kept a pig, which they could keep half of when they killed, the other half going to MOF. I always looked after Horace, as I called him, but at our Harvest Supper, he was on the menu and I refused to eat him 鈥 how could I when I had been feeing him? Harvest Supper was great fun with everyone mucking in, but I was teased for weeks about not eating any meat.
