A cloudless Sunday. We ,nurses, were bringing lunches around on a floor for wounded german officers and for allied pow's (we had only one:A Polish pilot shot down over Warsaw. He had a habit of jumping out of trains en route to an other Stalag. This was the 3d time)We heard a deep hum and wondered what th脿t was. When we looked out of the window we saw a sky filled with airplanes pulling funny looking planes on cables:the GLIDERS!!Where were they going? What was going on??A bunch of dutch underground men climbed the smoke stacks of brick makimg factories close to the river Rhine. With binoculars they observed the amazing "Battle of Arnhem".My husband was one of those guys and told me that on Wednesday the 20 th,things went wrong. He had his sailboat in the river and when it was dark he ferried as many allied over to the safe side as quietly as possible.I was working as a anurse in a hospital N.of Eindhoven and close to the town of Grave. We got many pow's, wounded, some in bad shape.Since another nurse and I could speak english (not too fluently yet) we were assigned to take care of them.We told the least serious wounded how to fake certain pain when the german md's made rounds so they were not sent to a Stalag right away.I often wondered what happened to them,
