My grandfather worked as a fireman during the war. This meant he was exempt from having to go overseas to fight - something the family was very relieved about . He worked on Sale firestation and stayed there until his retirement in the 1970's my father followed him into the service but never had to deal with the fires like the ones Grandad did caused by the bombs dropping on Manchester and the surrounding area during the war.
