My mother Christina Landels told me that at the start of the war she was walking with me in the outskirts of Edinburgh. She saw some planes passing low overhead and she and others waved to the pilots who could be clearly seen in their cockpits. It was only later that they realised that they were German planes making a raid on the Forth railway bridge. I was too young to remember this event but my mother said that many people at that time made the same mistake.
