Life in a Lincolnshire village was still a happy time for the children. We had plenty of vegetables and fruit to eat with the rabbits, hares, old hens, pheasants, rooks, fish and the pig at Christmas. Also most of the families had a few hens or fowls of some sort and managed to avoid the dried egg powder.
Our mothers could make do and mend, so everything was recycled so that we could be dressed well, even though clothes were rationed. As we grew out of clothes they were unpicked and either remade to fit a younger member of the family, or two garments were made into one; quite fashionable in 2005 to have those wartime styles. Since my parents had just children at home, some of our outgrown clothes were given to a large family in exchange for some of their clothing coupons. This benefited both sides since their father was a farm labourer earning a very small wage and they could not afford to buy new clothes. Their mother was an amazing woman and managed on a pittance, as so many mothers of large families did at this time.
