A short time after the invasion of Italy, I was stationed at the sea-port town of Bari. My hair
had become uncomfortably long and I decided to walk into Bari town centre and have my hair cut by a civilian barber. As I approached the main street the sky became overcast and in few minutes time it had become quite dark and it also started to rain.
On entering the brightly lit barbers shop, I glanced into the wall mirror and to my suprise I found myself covered in thick chocolate brown mud.My first reaction was to wonder how the Radar set for which I was responsible had fared.I returned to the gun sight and found the gunners busily cleaning the AA guns. The arieal array was also covered in mud which I was required to clean. Suddenly the skys cleared and everything became normal.
Later that evening we heard on the radio that Mount Versuvias had erupted and a cloud of ash had been blown from Naples to the east coast town of Bari
