My great great uncle was a lieutenant in the Greek army when Italy invaded Greece. The war was mainly in the mountains and people were freezing to death. The Italians were pushing the Greeks back and had to retreat. Takis and two other soldiers volunteered to stay behind and hold back the Italians in a valley until the rest of his regiment had made a safe retreat. After a day of fighting them the two soldiers left him with a heavy machine gun. Takis held them off for another two days before retreating as well. The whole Greek army then counter attacked the Italians back but the Germans then helped the Italians beat the Greeks. In one of the battles, Takis was shot twice; once in the stomach and once in the shoulder. He was awarded a medal for his bravery. Unfortunately Takis was killed in a civil war Greece against the dictators.
