I was born in 1933 was living in Colchester and remember being in bed with the measles when I said to my mother, 鈥渢he German planes are coming!鈥 My mother said, 鈥淒on鈥檛 be silly, no they are not!!鈥
But then changed her mind when we heard the approaching planes overhead.
鈥淚 think you are right,鈥 she then said, 鈥渜uick get into shelter!鈥
I then looked up and saw a German plane that was so low you could see the pilot sat in the cockpit of the plane with his goggles he was so close.
I saw bombs being dropped from the plane and then all hell broke loose as we had an army barracks just up the road.
Another time we had 3 Lancashire fusiliers staying with us. They then marched to Dunkirk and left behind a bag of Chinese chequers as a present for me to play with.
Then at the end of the war I remember seeing some soldiers who had no guns and looking lost as they had just been demobbed.
