Up in the higher fields on the farm with my father, I saw a bomber flying over and it was accompanied by two fighter planes. It was going sedately across the sky and of course the fighters were so much faster than the bomber so they were flying all around the sky doing their aerobatics keeping pace with the bomber.

It reminded me of a ewe with two young lambs, the ewe is sedately grazing and the lambs are frisking around the ground, but always returning to base!

I read your story with interest. It must have been quite a sight! Most unusual too, to allocate two fighters to a single bomber. However, the fighters did not behave the way you saw for the reasons that you assumed. WW2 fighters had a limited range and only a few seconds fire power, so buzzing aimlessly about the sky was not a sensible thing to do.

Assuming that the aircraft you saw were German, a slow bomber was the Heinkel HE 111 with a top speed of 261 mph. A typical fast fighter was the Foche-Wulf FW 190, with a top speed of 408 mph. But the fighter would have no difficulty in flying alongside the bomber.

Bear in mind that if you have a car that can do over 100 mph, you can also drive it at 30 mph. The same principle applies to aircraft.
