The summer off 1944 was an extremely hot one and for my great aunt Eva, who was heavily pregnant at the time, the heat was very taxing.
She vividly remembers sitting on a bench at Kings Cross station shortly before my mother's cousin was born, waiting for my great uncle Geoffrey to arrive back from a meeting. The train had been cancelled and he had had to catch a later train, so she found herself waiting for a considerable time. Even in the shade of the station, she was still extremely hot and uncomfortable. Suddenly, a man appeared from nowhere with a tray of fresh peaches for sale. She bought two peaches and says that even today she still remembers the sweet taste in her mouth that day.
