When the war first started in 1939, I was just 8 years old. I lived in Middleton in Leeds. One of my early memories was of the air raids and the fear and disruption that they caused. One night, when the sirens went off, our next door neighbour, who was a tall and well build woman, dashed out and ran to the bottom of the garden in terror. I can rememeber vividly that she was so frightened that she hadn't bothered to change and was still wearing her nightclothes. Her husband, who was an ex- first world war army officer, realised what she had done and abruptly shouted, "Come back in to the house you silly b**ger, or you'll end up being their target tonight." Even in those terrible days, we all managed to have a sense of humour.
