During the war, I wanted to join the ATS, though the first time I was called up I became very ill and ended up in hospital with Scarlet Fever, I clearly remember my mum visiting me, having to wear protective clothing. By the time I regained health I couldn鈥檛 get into the forces, so I ended up undertaking work at Kirby, Simonswood factory, inspecting bullets as they were processed, ensuring that they were of the correct size and so on. The factory was especially built to aid the war effort and women were recruited from the age of eighteen. At the time I lived with my family by a park in Sleepers Hill and so my dad would accompany me on my way to work as my day started at 4am and I didn鈥檛 get home till 6pm!
