My grandmother was a very formidable lady. One evening she was preparing the evening meal鈥 think it was sausages as she was cooking in a frying pan, when the siren went for an air raid so all the family went to the Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden, but my grandmother refused, as she didn鈥檛 want to spoil the meal. It was a very bad raid with bombs dropping close by; one fell close enough to cause masonry to fall into the frying pan and ruin the meal. Grandmother was furious so she went out to the back door where the family were calling for her to come to the shelter and as she stood there a German plane flew low level along the back-to-back gardens approaching Grandmother and her frying pan. In a rage she threw the frying pan at the plane and was even more incandescent with rage to clearly see the pilot laugh and wave at her.
