During the Portsmouth Blitz there were very severe fire raids with incendiary bombs that would destroy power supplies for weeks. As our school was central it was used as a major base for all the firemen and the teachers asked for volunteers to help the men, by feeding and catering for them. I remember how exhausted and distraught they were as they worked all hours of the day and night trying to control the fires.
