West end of Manchester Cathedral, 1950s, with air raid shelter.
This image shows the Cathedral in the early 1950s, with an air raid shelter outside (just to the right of the statue of Oliver Cromwell). In the Cathedral's Oral History Archive, we have one or two interviews with people who remember having to be evacuated into that shelter from a service in the Cathedral. We would welcome hearing from anyone else who remembers what it was like being in that Cathedral shelter.
