my father a regimental sgt major in the Desert rats told me that at night lorries and vehicles would be guarded as the wogs the inhabitants were likly to try and pinch anything . It wasnt nice but had to be done . A person would take up position in a flat back lorry with a pick axe handle . Sometimes nothing happened , sometimes a hand or fingers would come over the tail gate at 2-3 am in the morning . Hopefully the guard would be awake and then would bring down the pick axe handle on the offenders fingers . A scream and they were gone . It was hard , but it was war . Kill or be killed , and you couldnt aford to lose food or equipement .
Not very nice but true all the same .
Apparently there were some inhabitants of Cairo with some very funny shaped fingers and hands come mornings .
