As told by Lottie Lowry
There were nine air raids on the day I got married: I got dressed in the Anderson shelter and so did all the bridesmaids and page boys. That was 63 years ago. I went to the hairdresser's and another bomb came, and I had to run out with my hair half done. We rolled a barrel of beer down the street to all the air raid shelters so that the men could have a drink.
In 1942 - 43 I was in the Land Army in Essex. My dad was on night work. We had to walk down a long chase and one time there were two Americans sitting in the gate. It was the day before they set off for D-Day. They asked if we had money for drinks. I gave them a pound note - that was a lot of money in those days. After the war, I got a letter of thanks, a silk handkerchief and a 拢1 cheque. It went to my Dunmow address and was forwarded to me. My husband wondered what I was doing getting letters from Americans.
