This story was given to the People's War website at Newhaven Fort 18th September by Amanda Wilkins on behalf of Pauline Bulman (nee Hubbard) with her permission, Pauline fully understand the site's terms and conditions.

I was working in a confectioners and tobacconists at 68 Preston Road, Brighton underneath the viaduct when it was bombed. The siren and the bomb all happened at once, it was mid-day.

I went out and gathered the children coming out of a private school opposite and took them through to the table shelter at the back of the shop.

I wasn't hurt but I was shocked, especially when I came out and saw the railway line hanging and the plate glass window went through.

All the jars of sweets fell down and a large piece of shrapnel came through.

I never went home for my lunch that day. My mother was so worried she sent my brother down to find if I was alright. I was sweeping up the glass off the pavement when he came.

We got the window fixed and carried on business as usual. I was 17 and a half in 1943 when it happened. I left in 1944 to join the Land Army, never left home before.
