My abiding memory of the war was on the 27th July 1944. I was 11 years old and I had just broken up from school for the summer holidays. It was about 5pm and my mother was fitting a dress pattern on me (we used to have to make our own clothes in those days!) The next think I remember was finding myself laying out on the front lawn with cuts on my face and legs and blood everywhere, ambulance men running around attending to all the casualties and then being rushed off to hospital!
Apparently a V1 rocket had landed in the garden of the house next door and six people were killed (including our neighbour) and our house was very badly damaged — so much that we needed to move out and evacuated to Nottingham for a year!
We eventually returned in august in 1945 when the house had been rebuilt, just in time for me to start grammar school in September.
