'SEVERE' PUNISHMENT.
Mr. Basil de la Mare of Courtil Blicq Farm, St. Andrew's, told me as a young man a group of them had been stopped by the Feldpolizie for cycling two abreast in Queen's Road. They had their bicycle tyre valves confiscated for the day and had to report in the evening to have the valves returned and be lectured about the misdemeanour. Little did the Feldpolizie know that in the meanwhile, the young men had persuaded some young Germans, who were not using their bikes, to lend them their valves for the day.
I recall on one occasion, when I was being naughty, how Mum threatened me by saying she was going to give me to the Germans. 'Go on then,' I thought, 'but I can't think what they would want with me.'
On another occasion, Mum being exasperated by my naughtiness, she said, "That's it, I'm leaving you - I'm going to live with the Germans!" I didn't like this idea and became 'good' for five minutes.
