"We came over on the Mayflower
(Queen Mary)鈥
When we were young, my father used to tease my mother by telling us kids that my mother and I came over on the Mayflower. That used to annoy her no end ! In fact my mother was born Florence Swaddle on February 18, 1923 in Gateshead, England. She met my father Robert W. Propp when she was a student nurse at the Royal Infirmary in Leicester, England. My father was a
paratrooper in the U.S. 82nd Airborne who was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and evacuated to a field hospital in England. The rest they say is history. My parents were married in St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Gateshead where I was later christened.
Now comes the part about the Queen Mary. My mother & I sailed from
South Hampton to New York in April 1946 along with 1200 other war brides and their children. We were put on a train to Muskogee, Oklahoma where we were met by
my father, grandparents & aunts and uncles. My parents have been married 59 years! The Queen Mary is now a floating museum in Long Beach, California. My mother doesn't remember it as being so small!
