I would like to relate an incident during the latter
part of the last war when the Japanese were held in
the northern part of Burma. Our troops led by the
third commando brigade were assaulting the coast and I
was part of the follow up infantry. We dug ourselves
in and faced a ferocious attack
which continued throughout the night. By daylight we
realized that the enemy had dug in adjacent to our
trenches. It took us the whole day to eject them.

In the meantime I was returning to my unit from the
landing craft and just missed being blown up by enemy
artillery fire. On the third day the enemy retreated
and left behind their dead. The Commando and our
infantry then withdrew to prepare for our next
objective further south down the coast.
