I was 5 when the war broke out and living down blankney fen near woodhall. I felt so excited because nothing like this had happened to me before and I didn鈥檛 understand the full concept of what was going on. My parents on the other hand acted a bit frightened and a bit wary of what was going on around us.
Bombs, aeroplanes and guns were going off all over the place. One day I can remember when an aeroplane crashed right near to our house, me and my brother went over to it and started playing about in it and exploring it, we didn鈥檛 know any different. It was great for us we didn鈥檛 have to go to school for about 3 weeks. There were soldiers surrounding us all down the streets, every where we went someone was there. I can remember covering the windows of the house with things; this was know as a blackout and it stopped the soldiers from seeing the lights in the house and stopped them from bombing us in the aeroplanes.
I wasn鈥檛 evacuated from my area because I wasn鈥檛 living in a town or any think but I can remember children who were evacuated because they went to my school. My older brothers were in the war fighting for their country and luckily survived but one of my brothers nearly didn鈥檛 after a shell went off in his tank. It was a close call. We were always listening to the news to see if there we any changes in what was going on. Finally one day when I was walking back from school there were loads of people in the pub and then I heard the words every one wanted to here 鈥渢he war was over鈥!
