At the beginning of The War, people were volunteering for National Service of all kinds, but there were some who were not prepared to volunteer for the Armed Forces, because of their personal beliefs.
These people were known as Conscientious Objectors and it was Government Policy at that time to take them into custody.
One such person, who I always remember as being a very nice polite man, lived with his Mother a few doors away from my childhood home.
One night I was awakened by the sound of loud voices and a heavy knocking on a neighbours door.
This was followed by the sounds of a struggle and high pitched protesting voices of a man and a women.
A car door was slammed and the vehicle driven rapidly away, but the distressed female voice could still be heard protesting for some time afterwards.
The next morning I heard my Mother and Father discussing about the police coming late at night to take the neighbour away and that his Mother had tried to prevent them from doing this.
His Mother subsequently told my Mother that her Son had been put into a prison in The Isle Of Man.
