Our family farm was close by to the satellite field for Alconbury. One day as a boy of five i had to come home from school on my own as my mother had the flu.I walked up the footpath to the main road to find an american convoy going past.It seemed endless to me and i became very upset and cried.A jeep puled up and an American military policeman got out wearing the white helmet that earned them the nickname 'snowball'.He said to me'Say son where's your mom?' I very tearfully explained and he picked me up,put me in his jeep, held the entire convoy up and took me right home. Then he said'what time you gotta be back sonny?'and he returned, took me back to school and proceeded to do this for the next 3 days, morning and evening until my mother was well enough to take me herself.
I shall never forget him although i didn't even know his name!
